Area immigrants add to Mexicantown’s success and vibrancy

Southwest Detroit and Mexicantown have been magnets for immigrants from other parts of the U.S. and from the rest of the world for a very long time. Henry Ford built the Rouge Plant in the 1920’s and provided real opportunities to achieve the American Dream. That dream included owning a home, building a strong family, and having the freedom to pursue future ambitions.

Today, immigrants continue to settle in our community for several reasons. Some are attracted to Michigan’s abundance of water. Area housing costs are reasonable and there are many business opportunities and jobs. Many local residents are undocumented immigrants who often work while you are sleeping. Many don’t seek medical services when they’re sick or call the police if they are victims of a crime. Most willingly pay taxes but will never collect benefits due to their undocumented status. Despite these hardships, they continue to come, adding momentum and vitality to the area.
Our diverse neighborhood is made up of many immigrants; whether we arrived yesterday or our families set down roots one hundred years ago; whether we moved here from the Deep South or came from another country. We share respect and understanding of each other; and we share the belief that if you work hard, make sacrifices, and remain focused you can achieve your own American Dream right here in Mexicantown, in Southwest Detroit, in Michigan.
